Nasal spray flu vaccine programme for children in Wales to be expanded

County Health Department: 'People of all ages are advised to get vaccinated'

It might still officially be summer, but healthcare professionals are already anxious about the flu.

Flu trackers watch what's happening on the other side of the world to figure out which flu strains to expect and what kind of flu season to brace for.

How bad will the 2017-2018 flu season be?

When flu virus is grown in eggs to make the vaccine, mutations can occur in key places (red) on the viral surface protein hemagglutinin, which undermine the shot's protective powers.

"At this time, the CDC and ACIP have not changed the recommendation for influenza vaccination of pregnant women", said the agency's fact sheet.

Dr Linda Diggle, head of preventive programmes, said that children aged five and below are two to three times more likely to contract the virus than adults and once infected can remain contagious for longer.

Another way to boost an immune response in the elderly is by giving them a high-dose vaccine. In order to protect yourself, plan to get a flu shot this fall for best coverage. 'Deaths in care homes can be high both because of low vaccination rates and ease of spread in such communities, ' explains Professor John Oxford, an expert in virology at Queen Mary, University of London. In 2015, 92% of documented B strain-related cases of influenza reported in Europe were caused by a B strain that was not included in the available trivalent vaccines during that season. "If you have questions about which vaccine is best for you, talk to your doctor or other health care professional". He said it went late into the year, lasting into April.

After getting the vaccine, it will take about two weeks for antibodies to develop in your body that will protect against the flu.

These organizations are working together to help deliver flu shots for uninsured and underinsured residents, and encourage preventive measures heading into the winter months and the peak of flu season. "In the meantime, you are still at risk for getting the flu".

The flu shot, or an accepted medical or religious exemption, is a condition of employment in the Health System and for many School of Medicine employees. They found loads of HA mutations, as expected, but most weakened the virus, making it "unfit", meaning it could not transmit human to human.
