BHU violence: Uttar Pradesh government orders judicial inquiry into violence

Students protesting at BHU over alleged sexual harassment of female student

The students of Banaras Hindu University were outraged when a case of eve-teasing surfaced in the university premises. The student fraternity in several districts as well as Opposition parties are angry at the action. A number of students, including women, and two journalists were injured in the lathicharge. A delegation of Samajwadi Party workers reached the university on Monday, heightening tension. There were reports of local administration changing the route for Modi's cavalcade to avoid the embarrassment in view of the protests launched by the BHU students.

It was reported that four girls suffered head injuries in the police lathi-charge.

Meanwhile, Varanasi Commissioner Nitin Ramesh Gokarn had informed ANI that the normalcy was restored after the agitation. The apathy of the administration is completely apparent in the inability of the respected Vice-Chancellor GC Tripathi to meet the protesters. She ran to her hostel and narrated the incident to her friends.

They have criticised Tripathi for calling the police and for forcibly closing down all the hostels for arts, science and commerce students till October 2. Efforts are being made to bring greater attention to the issue by placing it against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi's visit to his constituency Varanasi.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Raj Babbar was arrested along with other party leaders ahead of their participation in a protest demanding Tripathi's sacking. In fact, when cameras were being installed the same girls who are protesting today came to us and said that cameras will disturb our privacy. He was detained while on his way to meet the students on Sunday.

Speaking to the press near a protest over something in JNU, V-C Kumar said,"I have always believed that there is no problem inside a University that can't be solved with a couple of tanks".

On Saturday they marched to allegedly block the gate of the VC's lodge. But instead they all went after the girl and the other girls who felt concerned about their dignity and gathered and marched in protest. The VC should be censured for not playing the role of the father of every student. He came with his daughter to register a case against the alleged stalkers. The FIR against 1,000 students was lodged at Lanka police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by SO Rajeev Singh, who was removed and sent to Police Lines on Monday.

They do, for sure, but they do not call for politicisation and obfuscation in the name of campus politics. Earlier, the holidays were to have started from September 28.
