Jaguars' mistakes cost them in 23-20 OT loss to Jets

The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to take a knee before the national anthem is played prior to their game at the New York Jets on Sunday. "Winning" the first quarter of the season fell to a 2-2 start with another road game next week at Pittsburgh. "That's exactly what we did". But the Jaguars' ground game was tough as advertised and the Jets' run defense wasn't almost as impenetrable as the Dolphins found it. Powell had 113 yards at the half and a career-high 21 carries for 163 in the game. He then rumbled down inside the 10-yard line, almost ending New York's 61-game defensive touchdown drought. The Jets finished with 256 yards rushing. On third and short plays for the offense throughout the game, Jacksonville continuously pulled Leonard Fournette out of the game. I hated it because these guys were working their tails off, and they deserved for that one to go through the post.

It's best to sit McCown this week and find another viable fantasy football quarterback if you're desperate for one. Jermaine Kearse and Robby Anderson are OK receivers, but not game-breakers.

"To be a good team, you have to play to your standard regardless of who you're facing or the circumstances you're in", tight end Marcedes Lewis said.

For the first time, the Jets appeared to have a legitimate offensive threat.

Ealy said after the game he did indeed get the ball back.

"Oh, you can cancel Christmas", McGuire said with a laugh.

"They were doing what we thought they were going to do", Bortles said of the Jets.

The hosts had opened a 20-10 lead but had to survive two turnovers involving Powell that allowed the Jaguars to tie it at 20 and send it to overtime. Regardless, Powell's score set a new Jets franchise record for the longest touchdown run.

McGuire's big run came in the third quarter. He took a shotgun handoff from McCown, found a crease, cut up the field and wasn't touched on a 69-yard scoring gallop.

"We're still making progress", Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "It's a tough defense to run against". McGuire has a great chance to gain some traction and make a statement by having a strong game on the ground.

Defensively, the Jets had another strong effort after they almost shut out Miami last week.

ABOUT THE JETS (1-2): The Jets held Jay Ajayi and Miami's potent rushing attack to a total of 30 yards on the ground and 225 total, shutting down quarterback Jay Cutler (26 of 44, 220 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT).

After the scores from both teams, the Jaguars and the Jets settled into a defensive showcase. This season will likely be Forte's last in green. They had some success with that last week but the Jets had those routes covered and the offensive line wasn't up to the challenge NY was presenting with a pass rush.

For now, though, that's not on anyone's mind.

Following the special teams trickery, the Jets were called for a delay of game penalty. It's just what the Jaguars were looking for - a continuation of the way they played in London. In one of the photos included in the Jets' tweet, the sadness is evident on Ealy's face.
