Facebook dropped $2 billion to acquire virtual reality platform Oculus in 2014.

Zuckerberg, speaking at a conference for virtual reality developers, said the "Oculus Go" device would cost $199 and ship early next year, too late for this year's holiday shopping season but likely ahead of rivals.

The biggest hurdle for jumping into the entertainment world that is virtual reality is cost, but that looks set to change.

For anyone thinking of investing in VR just for the new Respawn game, you should hold your virtual horses - there's bound to be newer versions of the headset by the time the game is released in 2019.

It may turn out that Oculus Go supports some or all of Rift's full-bodied apps, but, right now, all it's confirmed to run are mobile VR experiences.

Facebook further announced that it will soon sell an Oculus bundle aimed at corporations for $900 that includes a headset, touch controllers, three sensors, a remote, and three Rift Fits-a component for the device's facial interface.

In a post on the official blog, Oculus announced that Oculus Go would begin shipping for $US199 from next year. However, Facebook is looking to give us a third option with the $US199 Oculus Go. "Although that first prototype had a full-blown mobile computer strapped to the back of your head, the feeling of freedom you got when first experiencing fully untethered positionally-tracked VR remains unparalleled", Oculus explains. The Oculus Rift price is also coming down to $399, but you still need a high-end video card in addition to that. However, they more closely resemble the controllers from Microsoft's upcoming mixed reality headsets. From what we have been hearing the chipset that will be powering this setup is Qualcomm's 821 chipset. First teased previous year, Oculus finished off the keynote with a quick update on that project, giving a glimpse at the Touch-inspired controllers in the works. His visions carry weight, largely because Facebook now has more than 2 billion users and plays an influential role in how people communicate. I know people who own the PlayStation VR. Oculus has said that the new headset is compatible with all apps and games already available for the Gear VR, giving it quite a large library from day one.
