The latest outbreak of dog flu occurred in May at two dog shows — in Perry Ga. and Deland Fla. — where infected show dogs then subsequently led to the infection of some 2,000 dogs in 30 states in the U.S

Just as you take steps to protect yourself from the flu every year by getting vaccinated, veterinarians say it's important that for our dogs, we do the same.

Influenza is widespread across much of the continental United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but local sources say Pipestone County has escaped significant impact.

Since the end of August, 65 people in Kentucky have died from the flu, eight of them in Metro Louisville.

Even if the vaccine doesn't prevent a person from contracting a specific flu strain, it does lessen the severity of the symptoms and can help avoid hospitalization.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue.
