Reagan column: Gun control starts at home

In Your Opinion: Second Amendment should be laid to rest

Guns aren't going away, especially in the USA, so deal with the reality instead of screaming for something that isn't going to happen and scapegoating the NRA and law-abiding firearm owners. The airline said the decision reflected "the airline's neutral status in the current debate over gun control". Every day when we go to class, a movie, work, any setting with a large number of people, there's the risk that some individual has gotten hands on a deadly weapon and has come to the point of being ready to murder as many innocent people as they can. Their standard refrain has been that talking "too soon" about guns after a fatal shooting is "insensitive" and "disrespectful" of parents of dead children and of survivors.

Although media coverage would have people believe that everyone in Florida has decidedly turned against guns in the wake of a school shooting, that isn't really the case.

This time, however, the descent has been much less pronounced - and it seems we've hit a plateau of interest around gun control.

"We have heard you". The businesses include Delta and United airlines; Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, National and Alamo rental vehicle companies; Best Western Hotels & Resorts and Wyndham hotels; North American Van Lines Inc.; MetLife Inc., which offered auto and home insurance incentive programs for NRA members; and Chubb Ltd, which underwrites an NRA-branded insurance policy for gun owners. They are winning the argument, with more than 90 percent approval in some polls for universal background checks and high approval rates for measures such as outlawing "bump stocks" and raising the minimum age to purchase assault-type weapons like the AR-15. But we should also expect that those who are able to have guns are, at the very least, not a threat to public safety. For that matter, most school violence does not even involve a gun at all. What about my freedoms - to walk through an airport, attend a movie, disco or concert, send children to school - without fear of being mowed down? "During the Virginia Ratifying Convention, Mason argued the importance of the public remaining armed, stating, " disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them..."
