Political will and gender equality


International Women's Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. International Women's Day was formally recognized by the United Nations in 1975 and is now celebrated in over 140 countries. There should also be an increased emphasis on having maximum women members in departments or functions, especially in male-dominated sectors such as energy, technology, and automobile; to enhance the diversity ratio.

BA1484 from Heathrow to Glasgow on Monday, March 5 brought together women in roles including baggage handlers, pilots and cabin crew, flight managers, loaders and push back teams, security, check in and airport teams.

More than four hundred years after a baby girl became the first child to be born in Bermuda, the island's women have continued to be pioneers in many facets of life. "One thing I've learned from my entrepreneurial journey is this, at the end of the day, your work should speak for itself and at that point, it doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman!" In order to do so, there are several internal barriers that women need to cross such as time-management, guilt-management, and fear-management. The significance of worldwide women's day has overtime gained increased visibility and has become a global custom today.

The potential of girls and women must not be squandered, added Ms Gurira, thanking those who stand up for women's rights and urged many more to join in taking the stand.

"WAO and the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) have been working with the government to draft the Gender Equality Act. Let's make 2018 the year when gender equality, inclusive growth and sustainable development were all given a shot in the arm across our region".

The economy and businesses also stand to benefit, with a recent PwC report estimating that closing the gender pay gap could bring benefits to the United Kingdom economy of £90 billion.
