Villanova gets win against MI in blow out - Recap, Box score

Villanova's Donte DiVincenzo is NCAA championship game star with record 31 points | Marcus Hayes

Villanova has none of these things.

The Ramblers had a hard time getting the ball to cutters against the bigger Wolverines, but the Wildcats are long and have strong finishers at almost every position. And yet they could appreciate the journey that allowed them to have such a high-stakes letdown.

What makes Villanova the class of college basketball - the first team to win two titles in three seasons since Florida repeated more than a decade ago, the second since Kentucky did it in 1996 and '98 - is this model of sustainable success, with players who could be the centre of attention at other big programs sacrificing to play for the Wildcats.

"Well, that was just one of those nights", Villanova coach Jay Wright said. Villanova also joined the 1968 UCLA team as the only ones to win both their Final Four games by 16 or more points.

Seven 'Nova players made 3s.

The Michigan assistant also said Villanova was the most skilled team they played all season.

Donte DiVincenzo, a sophomore for Villanova, gave a spectacular performance with a career-high of 31 points and claiming the title Most Outstanding Player.

"I don't know what they're using but some poor guy from Villanova has to smear it all over the place", Radnor Police Lt. Chris Flanagan told the Philadelphia Inquirer ahead of the March Madness championship game Monday.

The coaching staff won't have much time to savor this season.

"Buddy Hield Donte was a special person, and someone who might've came out tonight", Jalen Brunson, the Wildcats' star who ran into foul trouble and had only nine points against MI, told the Times. Omari Spellman made three, as well, in a 15-point, 13-rebound monster game. "Our goal is just to be the best team we can be by the end of the year. And we know what we're going to get next year".

"Everybody said he had a monkey on his back, he couldn't do it", Villanova legend Kris Jenkins said, following the Wildcats' national title win over MI on Monday night.

Villanova is one of the greatest 3-point shooting teams in college basketball history, breaking season and NCAA Tournament records.

VMI set that record in 2007. But Wright has just completed his fourth 30+ win campaign in a row, and there's no reason to assume the streak will fall anytime soon. "We love just going out there and grinding it out as a defensive team, and keep getting stops".

Most legends make it hard to see what's coming. "And with us it's usually two or three passes to get into some things, and we just didn't react".

Villanova attempted 40 shots from 3, and only 25 from 2. He scored 13 of those points in a 23-7 surge at the end of the half that turned Michigan's 21-14 lead into a 37-28 deficit. The big fella couldn't get there. They had a message for Gillespie, he said, for next season and beyond.

The German big man carried MI through its struggles in the first half by using his size advantage against the smaller Ramblers, snagging five offensive rebounds to notch a double-double by halftime. Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt cheered 11th-seeded Loyola-Chicago all the way to a spot in the Final Four. In fact, ratings for the 2017 game were up 29 percent from the 17.8 million who watched on Turner networks in 2016. He scored 16 and was the main reason why the Wildcats were able to erase an early seven-point deficit against a MI defense that was one of the stingiest in the nation.

That has changed at Villanova, of course, the chance at the offense hinging upon the upgraded defense and rebounding. "It's not ideal all the time, but we're honest with guys when they come in".
