A senior official in the regional alliance that supports President Bashar al-Assad said the attack by the United States, Britain and France would be viewed as contained if it was now over.
The strikes were launched at 9 p.m. ET, as most of Europe and the Middle East was shrouded in darkness.
Theresa May has faced both support and criticism from politicians across the United Kingdom after Britain launched strikes on Syria overnight alongside the USA and France.
The Russian military said it hasn't engaged its air defense assets at its air and naval bases in Syria.
And he set his own precedent just over a year ago when he ordered a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base after sarin was sacked at civilians in the town of Khan Sheikhun.
Syria's air defences "were made in the USSR more than 30 years ago", the ministry said. It was the base where helicopters were said to take off in the alleged chemical attack.
Syria "condemns with the strongest terms the tripartite US, British and French aggression on Syria as being a flagrant violation of the worldwide law and the principals of United Nations charter", SANA news agency quoted an official source at the ministry as saying.
The Russian military said the missiles were fired from U.S. ships in the Red Sea as well as from tactical aircraft above the Mediterranean and by United States strategic bombers from near the Al-Tanf base.
Mohamed Khairullah, the Syrian-born mayor of Prospect Park, was glad to hear Trump's announcement but said that hitting chemical weapons facilities did not go far enough.
"We assess that this was the primary location of Syrian sarin and precursor production equipment", Dunford said.
"Trump told the nation in his address the U.S. "cannot purge the world of evil or act everywhere there is tyranny".
Referring to Assad, Trump said, "These are not the actions of a man".
"The UK element of the carefully coordinated joint action was contributed by four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s", a statement from the UK Ministry of Defense said.

Trump said the attack would be sustained to ensure that Syria does not use chemical weapons to attack civilians.
The decision to strike, after days of deliberations, marked Trump's second order to attack Syria.
Stands United: Boris Johnson on US UK French Missiles Attack on Syria
Mr. Trump described a very specific type of target that the US would go after, which are Syria's chemical weapon capabilities.
And if we are serious about confronting Iran, Syria remains the most important battlefield.
It does not appear that there are any follow up strikes now planned based on the available information at the time. We can stop both.
Mr. Trump met with his national security team at the White House Wednesday afternoon to discuss options for striking the Syrian regime.
Anatoly Antonov, the Russian Ambassador to the U.S., says the military action threatens Russia - and there will be consequences.
"A predesigned scenario is being implemented", he said.
"When it comes to this use of chemical weapons, it is clear to Canada that chemical weapons were used and that they were used by the Assad regime", Freeland said.
The Russian military had vowed to respond to any attack, and Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration had repeatedly warned that Trump was taking America down a unsafe path.
Washington, Paris and London have nevertheless insisted that their own secret intelligence points to Assad's guilt, and on Friday, a U.S. spokeswoman said they had "proof".
Trump also called out Russia's promise in 2013 that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.
It could also help avert the looming war on Israel's north and persuade Russian Federation that its adventure in Syria won't pay long-term results, especially if Assad is gone.
Mattis said that Russian Federation, which has allied itself with Bashar Assad's regime, was not consulted or warned about the airstrikes.
The chairman of the global affairs committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, described the air strikes as a groundless attack on a sovereign government, Interfax said.
"Americans should not change regimes around the world to get somebody we like and fight people we don't like", he said, calling for a peaceful resolution among fighting factions.
As our commander in chief, the president has the authority under Article II of the Constitution to use military force overseas to defend important USA national interests.
"We used the normal deconfliction channel to deconflict airspace, we did not coordinate targets", Dunford said.
